At the World Food Summit of 1996, the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) member states pledged their political will to an effort to eradicate hunger in all countries and to achieve food security
for all. The target is to reduce the number of undernourished people by one half (400 million) by 2015 (more) This goal was reconfirmed in 2000 at the UN Millennium Summit which integrates the eradication of poverty as well and the indicator 1.9 of the Millennium Development Goal I is: To halve the prevalence of undernourishment by 2015 (more) FAO Statistics Division has developed standard statistical methodology and procedures for the assessment and monitoring progress in hunger reduction at the global, regional and country level through the following two main indicators: - Prevalence of undernourishment or food deprivation and - Number of undernourished people (click here) These two hunger indicators together with a suite of other indicators of food consumption provide food security information at the national and sub national levels useful for identifying and locating the food insecure population for more focused food policies. |
