A situation that exists when people lack secure  access to sufficient amounts of safe and nutritious food for normal  growth and development and an active and healthy life. It may be caused  by the unavailability of food, insufficient purchasing power,  inappropriate distribution, or inadequate use of food at the household  level. Food insecurity, poor conditions of health and sanitation, and  inappropriate care and feeding practices are the major causes of poor  nutritional status. Food insecurity may be chronic, seasonal or  transitory.

: the Challenges of Climate Change and Bioenergy:  Rome, 3-5 June 2008


After a series of expert preparatory meetings, a High Level Conference on Climate Change, Energy and Food will be held 3-5 June in FAO's Headquarters. Organized jointly with IFAD, WFP and Bioversity International, the conference will focus on the impact of climate change, soaring food prices and the expanding biofuels markets on food security worldwide.

 Global Forum on Food Security and Nutrition

The FSN Forum is a global on-line community whose members exchange experiences, information and resources to find collective solutions to food security and nutrition (FSN) issues. The Forum’s website is also an important pool of relevant resources and information on FSN. The Forum is driven by the needs and involvement of its members, and coordinated by a Secretariat in FAO’s Agricultural Development Economics Division. The Forum’s main aims include bridging the knowledge divide among the different communities involved in FSN policies and strategies, through promoting cooperation and optimizing the dissemination and use of up-to-date FSN expertise. Membership is free of charge and open to anybody who could contribute to and benefit from this knowledge and resource sharing network.
