in Kenya, SNV, collaborated in 2004 to a spatial analysis of the determinants of poverty through the use of livelihood maps.  In a study spanning 105 sublocations in a semi-arid agro-pastoral District of Kenya, the scientists tested a new approach that allowed them to understand how different livelihood strategies arise from households’ access to five types of livelihood, or capital, assets – natural, physical, human, financial and social. These livelihood assets were mapped with community members using a combination of participatory approaches and existing data, and linked to household survey data for further analysis. This study, financed by FAO/FIVIMS, is advancing understanding of the reasons Kenyan households pursue different livelihood strategies and the major factors that help explain different poverty levels across sublocations and households. The study highlights the importance of spatial, or community-level factors (e.g. access to a health facility) versus household-level factors (e.g. level of education). This research provides useful information to policy makers at various levels and will help determine optimal poverty reduction strategies, including livestock-related options.

A situation that exists when all people, at all times, have physical, social and economic access to sufficient, safe and nutritious food that meets their dietary needs and food preferences for an active and healthy life.
District Profiles were compiled in response to a request by the MoA-run Njaa Marufuku Kenya (NMK) Programme. The NMK is a special programme for food security that was set up to guide the initiatives aimed at improving food security in the country. The end aim of the profiles is that of highlighting those areas where support is needed to achieve the NMK goals. The profiles cover 22 districts in 7 of the country's provinces. The profiles examine the food security situation in each district in all its various dimensions, they describe ongoing development programmes and highlight areas where support is needed to redress the food security situation.
