Glossary: food insecurity
Close
A situation that exists when people lack secure  access to sufficient amounts of safe and nutritious food for normal  growth and development and an active and healthy life. It may be caused  by the unavailability of food, insufficient purchasing power,  inappropriate distribution, or inadequate use of food at the household  level. Food insecurity, poor conditions of health and sanitation, and  inappropriate care and feeding practices are the major causes of poor  nutritional status. Food insecurity may be chronic, seasonal or  transitory.
and vulnerability
Glossary: vulnerability

The presence of factors that place people at risk of becoming food insecure or malnourished, including those factors that affect their ability to cope.

GeoNetwork Opensource PDF Print E-mail
GeonetworkGeoNetwork opensource is a standardized and decentralized spatial information management environment, designed to enable access to geo-referenced databases, cartographic products and related metadata from a variety of sources. By using the capacities of the internet, the spatial information exchange and sharing between organizations and their audience is thus enhanced.

Geographic Information System and Sustainable Development PDF Print E-mail
FAO GISMost sustainable development decisions are inherently multidisciplinary or cross-sectoral, because they require trade-offs between conflicting goals of different sectors. However, most natural resource development agencies are single-sector oriented. Geographic Information System (GIS) technology can help establish cross-sectoral communication - by providing not only very powerful tools for storage and analysis of multisectoral spatial and statistical data, but also by integrating databases of different sectors in the same format, structure and map projection in the GIS system. This website (http://www.fao.org/sd/eidirect/gis/EIgis000.htm) provides a background to FAO and natural resource data bases, and an overview of concepts and technical aspects of GIS, applications of GIS technology, poverty and food insecurity

and environmental management. The poverty map website (www.povertymap.net) offers you access to:
  • A global spatial database of poverty mapping examples and possible indicators;
  • A comprehensive library of publications, newsletters, and articles related to poverty and the environment;
  • Links to finding additional information; and
  • Specific information on food security, poverty, and the environment, including case studies from nine developing countries.

Resources

The FAO Hunger Map
FAO estimates of undernourishment as a measure of hunger or food deprivation.
Chronic Undernutrition among Children 2003 (an indicator of poverty)
These global maps show the distribution of chronic undernutrition at national and subnational levels using stunting in growth among children under five years of age as an indicator of poverty and/or chronic food insecurity.
The application of a spatial regression model to the analysis and mapping of poverty
This study investigates an approach based on the spatial regression model, for mapping poverty in Ecuador. It also documents the use and impact of such an approach and the opportunities it offers.

Key Publications

Choosing a method for poverty mapping
Poverty and food insecurity are heterogeneous phenomena in most countries; types and depth of poverty, measured in different ways, vary between and within countries and regions.
Food Insecurity, Poverty and Environment Global GIS Database
The FGGD Digital Atlas consists of more than 100 global maps that allows to analyse food insecurity and poverty in relation to environment.
A geospatial framework for the analysis of poverty and environment links
The report begins with a review of the demand for better information that emerged during the Summit decade, culminating with the Millennium Summit in 2000. It explains how georeferenced information can be used to bring greater precision to the understanding of spatially-related factors underlying poverty and food insecurity and discusses the role of Food Insecurity and Vulnerability Information and Mapping System (FIVIMS) in promoting greater use of geospatial information.
Mapping biophysical factors that influence agricultural production and rural vulnerability
The report considers the constraints imposed by environmental conditions at different levels of human input, evaluates agricultural production potential of the world’s land area at a resolution of 5 arc-minutes (about 85 square kilometre at the equator), and reports on rural habitation in relation to agricultural production potential, land use patterns and farming systems.
