for all.
The target is to reduce the number of undernourished people by one half (400 million) by 2015 (more)
This goal was reconfirmed in 2000 at the UN Millennium Summit which integrates the eradication of poverty as well and the indicator 1.9 of the Millennium Development Goal
The Millennium Development Goals are eight goals that 189 United Nations member states have agreed to try to achieve by the year 2015. The Millennium Development Goals derive from earlier "international development goals", and were officially established at the Millennium Summit in 2000, where 189 world leaders adopted the United Nations Millennium Declaration, from which the eight-goal action plan, the "Millennium Development Goals", was particularly promoted.

FAO Statistics Division has developed standard statistical methodology and procedures for the assessment and monitoring progress in hunger reduction at the global, regional and country level through the following two main indicators:
- Prevalence of undernourishment or food deprivation and
- Number of undernourished people (click here)
These two hunger indicators together with a suite of other indicators of food consumption provide food security information at the national and sub national levels useful for identifying and locating the food insecure population for more focused food policies.

Food insecurity may be chronic, seasonal or transitory.

FSSM CD-Rom is available in English, French and Spanish versions and distributed to National Statistical Organizations (NSO) (Available on request).

The FAO Statistics Division has a well established Household Survey Programme providing statistical training to countries in the collection, processing and analysis of food consumption and income data in their regular national household survey (NHS) programme. The main objectives of this programme are:
